Working with Patients with Substance Use Disorder Training helps healthcare providers learn how to deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-based care by understanding SUD as a chronic condition, reducing stigma, applying trauma-informed practices, and using prevention, treatment, and harm-reduction strategies effectively.

What You Will Learn:

• Describe Substance Use Disorder (SUD) as a chronic, treatable health condition and explain its biological, psychological, and social determinants.

• Differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies for substance use and overdose prevention.

• Apply person-first, non-stigmatizing language and trauma-informed care principles when interacting with patients with SUD.

• Identify evidence-based treatment options for SUD, including medications, behavioral therapies, and recovery supports.

• Implement SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) appropriately in clinical or community care settings.

• Recognize the role of harm reduction strategies, including naloxone distribution, in preventing overdose and reducing health risks.

• Explain key legal, ethical, and compliance considerations related to HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 when caring for patients with SUD.
