WIC Foundations & Nutrition for Healthcare Providers

The following WIC Foundations & Nutrition for Healthcare Providers course is designed to educate healthcare providers (HCPs) on the structure, purpose, and impact of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). This course helps HCPs understand WIC’s eligibility criteria, nutrition risk assessments, food package design, and the critical role healthcare professionals play in connecting families to WIC resources. Learners will gain the knowledge needed to effectively collaborate with WIC programs, support maternal and child nutrition, and improve health outcomes through early nutritional intervention.

What you will learn:

• History, mission, and structure of the WIC program

• Eligibility requirements and certification process

• Core components of WIC services, including nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and food packages

• Understanding nutrition risk assessment and the VENA model

• Counseling and education strategies for diverse populations

• Nutritional needs during pregnancy, postpartum, infancy, and early childhood

• WIC’s role in preventing chronic disease through early nutrition

• Healthcare provider collaboration and effective referral practices

• Addressing barriers to WIC participation and promoting cultural competence
