The following PTSD Symptoms and Treatment in Veterans Training is designed to educate healthcare providers (HCPs) on the unique causes, symptoms, comorbidities, and evidence-based treatments of P.T.S.D. in veterans, as well as practical skills for delivering trauma-informed, veteran-centered care.

What You Will Learn:

  • Define Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.) and explain its prevalence among U.S. veterans compared to the general population.

  • Identify the unique risk factors for P.T.S.D. in veterans, including combat trauma, moral injury, and military sexual trauma (M.S.T.).

  • Recognize the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and common screening tools used to assess P.T.S.D. in clinical practice.

  • Describe the common symptoms and comorbidities of P.T.S.D. in veterans, including depression, substance use disorders, and traumatic brain injury (T.B.I.).

  • Explain the principles and effectiveness of evidence-based treatment options, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (C.P.T.), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (P.E.), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.).

  • Discuss the role of pharmacological interventions, including first-line medications and those not recommended for treatment.

  • Apply trauma-informed and veteran-centered communication strategies to build trust and avoid re-traumatization during clinical encounters.

  • Identify available resources and referral systems (e.g., VA programs, Vet Centers, Veterans Crisis Line) to support ongoing care for veterans with P.T.S.D.

Once completed, you will receive a certificate of completion to verify you have finished the training. Course Length: 30 min; CME: 0.5.
